The Desert LCC works collaboratively with partners to address the conservation of declining species in priority landscapes. State fish and wildlife agencies, in particular, play a key role in providing expertise to identify the specific management needs of species, priority areas to do this work and receptive landowners. We help support the management and conservation of wildlife by providing a forum for partners to collaborate and contribute to the science needed for conservation efforts, identifying areas that can provide for the needs of numerous species within the landscape; and developing an efficient monitoring program to measure species and habitat outcomes across a landscape. Currently, the Desert LCC is focusing on the vulnerability of amphibians and reptiles, which provide an excellent indicator of changes to functioning ecosystems, particularly in regard to assessing impacts from climate, fire, vegetation, and water supply. These species are of concern may be a comparatively low-cost option to provide managers with information about management practices to avoid impacts to species.
